Hey all of you ozarkians that paid attention when great grandma was talking,I have a question.  Does anyone know what Heart signs vs. Leg signs mean?  It has to do with planting and pretty much any planning thing, including burials.  A friend is reading a book on the Ozarks and asked me about it.  Unfortunately,I did not pay as close attention as I should have when taught these things at a young age...so,any one know this answer?

:)Chris, you are right, the heart and leg signs have to do with planting if one uses the zodiac signs as a guide to plant and harvest crops.  The heart sign is the zodiac sign "Leo" while the Leg sign is the zodiac sign "Aquarius".  The Leo is also considered a fire sign, while Aquarius is considered an air sign, all zodiac signs have a body part, element, planet and symbol associated with any given zodiac sign.

I Was born and raised in the Blue Ridge Mtns of Virginia and my folks always used the signs to plant and harvest or do any work that was required around place.   An example of planting/harvesting by the signs is never plant anything in one of the barren signs, they are good for trimming, deadening and destroying.  Plants should be set in a water or earth sign, plants do best in the fruitful signs(when the signs are in the loins, feet, neck or breast)  It is good to plow, till, and cultivate in the "head sign" or
aries.  Corn planted in Leo or the heart sign  will have a hard round stalk and small ears....

Hope this will give some insight as to planting by the signs

My folks did not absolutely plant all things by the zodiac signs, but my Dad surely would not dehorn a cow, or castrate anything, if the signs weren't right.  I remember him saying once, when he almost lost an animal - couldn't get the head to quit bleeding, that he had neglected checking the sign - and he never failed to check it again.

There is more to the zodiac signs than just planting and harvesting, up on Afton Mtn where my folks were from people used the signs for just about everything...if you were building a new house or barn it was best to lay the foundation in Capricorn, aries was a good sign to bake or cook in, if you cut your hair in libra, sagittarius, aquarius, or pisces it will grow stronger, thicker and more beautiful...don't think it works all the time given the fact that
I am hair challenged....you need to quit a habit on the second day that the moon is in sagittarius or on the new moon or in pisces..
